The pure tone audiogram is an accurate measure of auditory threshold as a function of stimulus frequency. However, it does not provide the complete picture in patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) because it is not a direct measure of damage to the cochlear epithelium or of the associated limits on information-carrying capacity that restrict word recognition.

An audiogram will usually show three different results: pure-tone results for the left ear, pure-tone results for the right ear and bone conduction results. The pure-tone tests for the left and right ear are the “normal” hearing test, the one where you wear a pair of headphones and are asked to press a button when you hear a sound.

These frequencies are low on the left side of the audiogram (250Hz), then gradually climb to higher frequencies on the right side (8000 Hz or 8kHz). An audiogram is the graphical representation of the results of pure-tone air conduction tests. Vertical lines represent the testing frequencies, arranged from low-pitched on the left to high-pitched on the right. Horizontal lines represent the loudness, from very soft at the top to very loud at the bottom. Audiogram – tolkning av audiometri. A hearing test involves a number of steps and assessment procedures to find out your threshold of hearing (the softest sounds you can hear). The results of the audiometric assessment are plotted on an audiogram and compared to normal hearing levels. An audiogram is an inverted graph (upside down from most common graphs).

PTA provides a method for separating conductive losses, located in the outer and middle ear, from sensorineural losses associated with problems in the cochlea and central nervous system. The shape of the audiogram resulting from pure-tone audiometry gives an indication of the type of hearing loss as well as possible causes.

8000 Hz is a high tone sound. This is because the pure tone produces sufficient basilar-membrane vibrations in neighbouring areas of the cochlea, where there are surviving IHCs and neurons. This phenomenon is defined as “Off Frequency Listening”. Clinically, this will be presented as a threshold on the traditional pure tone audiogram, but it may not be the real threshold. Standard pure-tone audiometry provides diagnostic information regarding the degree, type, and configuration of hearing loss. Hearing thresholds are obtained to air conduction (0.25–8 kHz) and bone conduction (0.5–4 kHz) stimuli. In addition, an initial audiogram should include speech reception thresholds and word recognition scores.

This whitepaper discusses the characteristics of severe-to-profound hearing loss and describes how the hardware and audiological features in Oticon Xceed and Oticon Xceed Play are designed to meet the needs of the power users. This whitepaper reports technical measurements showing Oticon Xceed A pure tone audiogram, such as that seen in Figure 1, can identify which type of deafness a patient has. This is a subjective test that relies on the patient’s responses to stimuli.

Audiometer is connected to standard & specified bone conduction vibrator or earphones As its name suggests, a pure tone hearing test uses pure tones to determine if a person can perceive every frequency in the audible spectrum. This type of hearing test is classed as a subjective test and is carried out using a device called an audiometer. The audiometer registers the results in an audiogram and reveals if your hearing is Uses of Pure Tone Audiogram • It is a measure of threshold of hearing by air and bone conduction and thus the degree and type of hearing loss. • A record can be kept for future reference.
